Grant for Parents who want to attend CCA!

Strengthening Working Families Program at Community College of Aurora

The Strengthening Working Families Initiative grant (“SWFI”), in partnership with the US Department of Labor, allows the Community College of Aurora to help parents access jobs in high demand industries (Healthcare, Information Technology, and Advanced Manufacturing), while addressing a common barrier parents face, childcare.   The grant will run for 4 years (July 2016 thru June 2020) and offers a sustainable solution for a family seeking independence and self-sufficiency.  We pair the students with:  A bridge program to prepare them for college-level courses; an Achievement coach to help them navigate challenges to the higher education process and expectations; A Childcare Navigator to address their childcare needs; and the Career Advisor to assist with the job placement process.  All of these services are provided at little to no cost to the student. The Strengthening Working Families Initiative is funded by the US Department of Labor and Employment.
In order to participate in the program, participants must meet the following qualifications:
  • 17 years of age or greater
  • Custodial parent (legal guardian, foster parent, or other) or parent of child, 13 years of age or younger.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. (must have a Social Security Number or applicable work permit, e.g. DACA).
  • Must have an interest in one of the three sectors/programs (Healthcare, Information Technology, or Advanced Manufacturing).
  • Must have High School Equivalency (HSE) or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or willing to complete.
Many of the academic certificates will allow participants to complete within one or two semesters.
