Horizons North Credit Union Scholarship - Applications Due April 17th

2015 Horizons North Credit Union Scholarship Application
*Family must be a member of the Credit Union.* 

Purpose: This scholarship is intended to give financial assistance to a deserving student. It is not
intended to cover all expenses. In the planning of your financial need, you should not assume that a
scholarship has been awarded until you are officially notified. The scholarship application process is
intended to insure the recipient, and all applicants have basic financial training that will assist them
during their studies and in life beyond college.

Award: The scholarship award will be $1,000 to assist in obtaining further education or training in a
school of higher education. It will be awarded without reference to race, creed, color, religion or sex.

To be considered, please complete the Horizons North Credit Union Scholarship Application (accessed HERE) and return to Krista Burnell at Horizons North Credit Union by April 17, 2015.

Application Process
• Fill out the official application and submit by 04/17/15.
• Personal Essay
• Two (2) Letters of Recommendation (Please include two letters of recommendation, including one from a teacher in your school. DO NOT include letters from relatives.)
AND
Pick one of the following required interactive entries:
• Create a digital movie and that can be posted on the HNCU Facebook page about why
financial literacy or continuing their education is important to young adults.
• Submit electronically via e-mail, CD, or zip drive a presentation to HNCU aimed at your
peers with your plan for maintaining good credit throughout your college career.

Eligibility Requirements to Apply:
1. Must have a scholastic record of 3.0 GPA or better.
2. Must be graduating from high school.
3. Must be planning to attend a school of higher education.
5. Must register for at least six (6) credit hours per semester.
6. Scholarship will be void if student does not enroll in vocational school or
college during the 2015-2016 school year, beginning in fall semester 2015.
7. Applicant or parent of applicant must be a member of Horizons North Credit Union.
8. Applicant may apply for second year assistance. He/she must have maintained at lease
a C- average and completed six (6) credit hours per semester.
9. If applying for the second year scholarship ($500), a new application with transcript
must be submitted by March 27, 2015.
10. You must submit your application for the first year scholarship by April 17, 2015.

Criteria & Consideration Process for Horizons North Credit Union Scholarship:
Academic Commitment: Candidate demonstrates a high academic achievement level reflected in a
high grade point average (GPA); test scores (CAT & TABE or PLATO); taking a variety of
challenging classes; few, if any, lost classes; and maximum effort exerted in the classroom.

Leadership: Candidate is willing to take on leadership roles (whether formal or informal); serves
others as a positive role model; active in school-related decision making; has successful involvement
in leadership classes; and is willing to motivate and inspire others.

Perseverance: Candidate has held to a course of action; has not given up in challenging
circumstances; has overcome obstacles; and succeeds by following through with goals.

Citizenship: Candidate engages in positive behaviors; serves others as a positive role model;
promotes mutual respect and appropriate confrontation; is willing to help others; and is active in
school related activities.

Service: Candidate has been helpful to staff and other students; engages in volunteer efforts both in
school and in the community; serves as a student assistant and/or tutor; and is consistently committed
to the well being of others.

Final decisions will be made by the scholarship committee. The scholarship will be granted to the first alternate when, and if, the recipient does not continue his/her education.
