Denver Zoo Crew - Teen Volunteer Program - Application goes live Jan. 1st!

Ages 13-17
$150 to cover t-shirt/training/all materials - Scholarships are available!!!!

Applications go online January 1st and close March 1st. We ask that all applicants complete 5 essay questions and provide references from two non-family member adults.

Teens accepted into the program are asked to commit to 75 hours during June, July and August.

Zoo Crew is designed especially for teens interested in animal careers and/or environmental education. Applicants must be at least 13 years old, and no older than junior in high school by the application deadline.

First year teens (Junior Crew) work at interpretive stations education the public, assist with Summer Safari day camp, while also having the opportunity to work in animal areas.

After one summer of participation, teens are required to assist with one week of Summer Safari, one Special Event and to continue with their work at Teen Interpretive Stations around the Zoo. In addition, the second year and beyond (Volunteen) is a time when teens can tailor their own experience at the zoo by applying to one or more voluteen positions in the areas that they choose. Positions are available in a variety of departments.

Internship - Denver Zoo Wildlife Show

 Wildlife Show Unpaid Animal Internship

Description: At Denver Zoo, our mission is to secure a better world for animals through human understanding. We are a respected leader in animal care and exhibition, conservation programs, scientific study, environmental education and public service.

 Summary:
 The Denver Zoo is looking for energetic, creative, fun-loving individuals to assist in animal care and other various Animal Ambassador Department activities as part of a team of talented, experienced staff and volunteers. Positions to begin May 1, 2016 and go through Labor Day 2016. Start and end dates are flexible. This position will be 24-32 hours per week; workday is flexible, but traditionally is 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays.

Duties:
•Daily husbandry for the Wildlife Show animal collection, which includes mammals, birds, and reptiles. These tasks include cleaning enclosures, preparing diets and providing enrichment for the animal collection.
•Participate in animal observation and enrichment ethograms.
•Assisting in the presentation of live animal shows and demonstrations, which may consist of small groups to larger audiences.
•Conducting informal public demonstrations utilizing animals in the collection.
•Demonstrating excellent customer service skills while working with visitors.
•Maintaining excellent communication, both written and oral, with supervisors.
•Complete a special project: May be assigned to work on during the internship and present to an audience.
•Adheres to and promotes Denver Zoo’s mission, core values, and strategic initiatives.
•Demonstrates a commitment to Denver Zoo’s Safety & Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.

 Additional Responsibilities:
•Working respectfully with staff, and adult and teen volunteers.
•Maintaining flexibility and a positive attitude in an ever-changing work environment.
•Following all safety protocols and advising supervisors of safety concerns.
•Ability to work outside in varying climates.
•Representing the zoo professionally to guests and demonstrating excellent customer service skills when working with visitors.
•Performs various tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
•Student of environmental education, biology, zoology, psychology, or related fields.
•Willingness to handle animals (training will be provided).
•Enjoy working with children and the public.
•Interest in conservation and environmental education.
•Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work dexterously with hands and arms.
•Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
•Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Please use this checklist as a “to do” list to help you make sure your application is complete (you do not need to submit this page along with your application materials). Applications are due to us no later than March 1, 2015 (postmarks not accepted).

What to do to complete your teen volunteer application:
1. Read the requirements of the teen volunteer program and download an application online at http://www.denverzoo.org/zoo-crew-teen-volunteer-program
2. Read the entire teen volunteer application to be sure you know the pieces you will need to complete.
3. Identify two references and have them complete the reference letter of recommendation form. References should be adults (18 years or older) who know you well but who are not related to you (teacher, family friend, etc). Give your references the forms to fill out at least two weeks before March 1st, 2015.
4. Complete the online or paper application form with all needed information. Answer the 5 essay questions. We recommend that you write a draft of your essays first, make edits and then attach the final copy to your paper application or type them into the online application.
5. Mail, email, fax the application with essays or complete application online by:
March 1st, 2015.
