Today’s young people are the future of our community and our country. Below are several resources and opportunities for students in the 7th Congressional District:

• Congressional Art Competition: Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. Click here to learn more.
• Congressional Award: An award given to individuals between the ages of 14-23 who have made outstanding achievements in four areas: Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Participants work with an advisor, such as a teacher or a coach, to set goals in each of the four program areas. To learn more, visit http://congressionalaward.org/.

• Service Academy Nominations: Our country needs the service of the best and the brightest our Congressional District has to offer. • STEM Competition: The Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition is a nationwide competition designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage STEM education. It was established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013 to allow students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. • Youth Advisory Council: As a Youth Advisory Council member, participants will be asked to attend meetings and share with the Congressman and other Youth Advisory Council members their perspective, experience, comments and ideas on a variety of topics chosen by the students as well as current events and upcoming legislation. The Council is comprised of up to 20 high school students from throughout the 7th Congressional District, selected by the staff of Congressman Ed Perlmutter. YouthBuild Fall Term - Mile High Youth Corps

YouthBuild is a Mile High Youth Corps program in partnership with RiseUp Community School.

  

Corpsmembers develop construction skills while providing a minimum of 450 hours of community service through serving on affordable housing projects; obtain further educational goals and engage in leadership development, civic engagement and college and career readiness activities. 

RiseUp Community School sets  themselves apart by offering:

·         A meaningful curriculum.

·         Student-centered support.

·         Job skills.

·         A flexible schedule.

·         Short, focused classes to earn credits.

Members will:

-Learn construction skills and earn industry recognized credentials while earning a diploma

By serving alongside construction staff and professional trades-people to become familiar with construction tools, vocabulary and methods. During orientation they will receive their First Aid/CPR, OSHA, Multi-Craft Core Certification (MC3), and hands-on technical training related to all construction projects

-Embody change through leadership opportunities

By serving on the Leadership Council, taking lead roles in the classroom and on the service site, and attending the Council of Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

-Serve your community while earning an income.

Students will attend classes at RiseUp Community School in the morning and work on the construction site in the afternoon.

-Explore further education options.

Besides their Americorps Education Award, Corpsmembers will develop skills and learn about options for college through FAFSA completion, financial aid and enrollment support, scheduled campus visits, preparation workshops, and more. The Education Award can then be used to pay tuition for college, trade schools or certificate programs.

Timeline/Benefits:

•             YouthBuild will start with the new RiseUp semester this fall; Corpsmembers spend 450 hours of service on a large scale affordable housing construction site.

•             $310 bi-weekly stipend and an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,515 at the completion of the program.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award - Grades 5-12 - Apply by Nov. 3rd

Prudential Spirit Of Community Award:

Now through November 3, middle and high school students who volunteer can apply for 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The program honors students in grades 5-12 who make meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. 2015 Summer Symposia Series - Applications Due June 15

2015 Summer Symposia Series

This is an amazing opportunity for high school students to learn more about Colorado's democratic process, and develop skills in the areas of research, interpersonal influence, and networking. Students will participate in various activities providing them with a deeper understanding of a few key issues that affect women and girls in Colorado. Through the mini model general assembly, students will experience being representatives and senators as they create and pass laws.

Students will have the opportunity to receive awards for participation, including a certificate of participation, scholarships, and laptops.

Immigrant Youth Achievement Award - deadline to submit nominations is Feb. 27th

Nominate your candidate for the Immigrant Youth Achievement Award! 

Each year, the American Immigration Council’s Immigrant Youth Achievement Award program receives over 200 nominations from around the country and assembles a panel of judges to select one individual whose personal and professional accomplishments exemplify the positive contributions young immigrants make to our nation each and every day.

The Immigrant Youth Achievement Award is an opportunity to honor our past, present and future as a nation of immigrants and celebrate the enduring contributions of young immigrants.

The Immigrant Youth Achievement Award is presented at our annual spring Washington, DC Immigrant Achievement Awards attended by 250-300 immigration attorneys, Capitol Hill staff, Members of Congress and immigration advocates.  Past honorees have emigrated from Ireland, India, Cambodia, China, and Cuba and have been recognized for their significant achievements in literature, journalism, music and politics.
