Volunteer Opportunity - Art with Elders

Volunteer Opportunity: Art with Elders The chance to develop meaningful, genuine relationships with elders – it’ll give you goosebumps

Info:
Tuesdays, 12:10 – 1:30, 8 weekly sessions
 At Kavod Senior Life
 No art experience necessary

Goal: Build bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art.

Overview: In a classroom setting, student volunteers will work one-on-one with elders, many living with dementia, to create failure-free abstract art. The volunteer is partnered with the same elder each week, and is meant to be supportive while empowering their elder to be as independent and creative as possible.

Volunteers do not need to have art experience or proficiency, just the ability to be patient, non-judgmental, positive and flexible. Training will be provided to better equip and prepare volunteers to support our seniors. In order to establish a meaningful connection with the elders, volunteers are asked to reliably attend each Tuesday. The course will culminate in an art show with food and drinks to celebrate our incredible accomplishments!

The program is called Opening Minds through Art – OMA. To learn more (and experience the goosebumps), please visit their website and watch the video on the homepage.

Impact:
The program is proven to overwhelmingly increase the well-being of residents, as well as promote a positive lasting impact on volunteers. More research here.
 “It makes me feel bright, happy” – OMA elder artist
“When I realize what I can do, I’m besides myself” – OMA elder artist

stories behind their favorite music.
 Teach senior residents how to operate music device.
 Learn best practices to support seniors with an uplifting experience.
 Use tech skills to download music from iTunes, but it’s more important to be interested in
forming positive relationships with seniors than being tech savvy.
 Commit to attending each session for 6 weeks.
 Celebrate with free food and drinks to commemorate our accomplishments at the final
session!

Goal:
To build bridges across age through offering personalized music to improve the quality of life
for seniors.

Info:
 Spring: 6 week session, 1 hour per week – Thursdays from 12:15 to 1:15 pm (tentatively)
 Experience downloading music through iTunes and building playlists is helpful, but not

well as promote a positive lasting impact on volunteers. Music & Memory also
 Helps reduce depression and anxiety.
 Helps moderate pain and reduce reliance on pain medications.

US Census Bureau - Now Hiring

The Census Bureau is working to fill thousands of positions nationwide in order to update this address list. As of March 4, more than 170,000 recruits had already completed job applications to qualify for temporary census jobs and more than 800 had been hired.
More will be hired through the year for jobs in the spring and summer of 2020. That’s when census workers knock on doors to interview people who don’t respond to the census.
Applicants can qualify for both field and office positions. The office positions, which are more limited, will be located in area census offices. The role of these offices is to recruit, select, hire, train, manage, and pay all office and field staff who work within the designated boundaries of the geographic territory assigned to the office.
Between January and March 2019, 39 area census offices for the Address Canvassing operation will become ready for business (see 2020census.gov/jobs/locations/national-map.html for a map and pay rates). Ultimately, another 209 such offices will open by September as the 2020 Census gears up for peak operations. That includes going door to door to follow up with households that don’t initially respond.

Easy to Apply

Applying for one of these jobs is simple. Just visit 2020census/jobs or call 855-JOB-2020 and select option 3 for more information. Pay rates for field and clerical jobs can be found at: 2020census.gov/jobs/locations/national-map.html.
Those who are being considered for a position will receive a telephone interview. If offered a job, they will receive instructions on next steps via email.
Applicants will need to complete paperwork online and make an appointment to get fingerprinted for the background check. Once they are offered the job, there will be a period of time before their start date to allow time for the background clearance process. To search for possible management positions, go to USAjobs.gov.
If applicants are not selected for the Address Canvassing operation, they may be called later if positions open later this year or in 2020. Their applications will remain on file.
