To align with becoming a Pathways College, Admissions & Outreach has developed a new way for high school students to visit campus – Pathway Days! Each of our free Pathway Days events centers on 1 of our 6 Career and Academic Communities (CACs) so we can better target students who are interested in a specific program area. Pathway Day attendees get to hear from faculty members about their classes and attend a resource fair to learn more about our student support services. Our first Pathway Day event is Friday, November 30th and will focus on the Social Sciences, Education & Public Service Career and Academic Community. This CAC includes the following programs: Anthropology, Criminal Justice & Public Safety, Early Childhood Education, Economics, Elementary Education, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. We are excited to be offering a new program at the Westminster Campus – a Public Safety Dispatch Certificate! This is a great option for students who are interested in Criminal Justice. Students can use this certificate to get into an in-demand job in less than a year. FAFSA Fun Day November 11th

Do you know of any students who need help completing their FAFSA? If so, please send them to FRCC’s FAFSA Fun Day on Sunday, November 11th from 1-3pm! We’ll have financial aid experts on hand to answer questions and assist students and parents with completing the form. This event is free and students have an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $1,000 scholarship to FRCC! Don’t forget to bring your tax information and W-2 forms. Free Open Art Studio - ages 7-17 - Aurora

Our Open Studio program is the main point of entry for young artists at DAVA. This drop-in program is for students ages 7-17 after school, Monday through Friday, with extended summer hours. Participants choose from a variety of art projects, including ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media.  Art projects are also designed to stimulate learning in other areas--including science, health, and geography.

The Open Studio is not only a creative space for young artists, it is a rich playing field for kids’ endless imaginations. It is often through the Open Studio that children first experiment with a wide variety of materials and learn how to navigate an arts classroom, follow instructions, and finish projects successfully.

The Open Studio is a free, drop-in program. No registration needed.

Summer 2018 - Project Voyce - Youth ages 14-25

Project Voyce is a leadership and action civics boot camp!

The VOYCE Academy brings together a diverse cohort of youth ages 14-25 for a 5-

week action civics bootcamp. The Academy provides the space for youth to build

community with one another, gain confidence, new perspectives, competencies, and a

better sense of their own path as a leader. Program participants explore topics related

to identity, power, and privilege, and learn skills such as civic leadership, participatory

action research, community organizing/advocacy, and youth-adult partnerships. The

program highlights the interdependence of critical consciousness and social action

through an Action Civics cycle: program participants use the skills and tools they’ve

learned about social change and apply them by developing a public policy

presentation. All participants are competitively selected for this transformative

program and receive a full scholarship for participation expenses and a participation

stipend at the completion of the program.

Porter-Billups Leadership Academy - June 11-June 29

The Porter-Billups Leadership Academy is a tuition free academic enrichment program that helps children cultivate their leadership ability. Inner-city youth from the Denver Metropolitan area are admitted to the Academy in third and fourth grade, and attend the 3 week program each summer until they graduate from high school. 

Academy participants are expected to maintain good grades and positive behavior. Participants must submit a current transcript or progress report, and letter of recommendation, every year.

2018 Theme: I Am B.O.L.D. Being Outstanding, LEADing Differently Objective: To address the values of mentorship, identity development, leadership and academic achievement in the lives of our young Black women. Purpose: The purpose of BW-LEAD is to provide high school Black women students with an opportunity to participate in a program that promotes leadership, academic achievement, and community involvement while developing their Black woman identity. Black women who are committed to empowering other Black women to be change agents in their schools, communities and families will lead engaging and interactive workshops. During the BW-LEAD conference, the young women will learn how sharing their stories and their lived experiences provide insight into their identity as a Black woman, and what it takes to become a leader in their personal life, school, and community, while inspiring them to focus on high academic achievement. Also, during the conference there will be occasions to share their thoughts and engage in discussions that relate to their experiences as a Black woman while learning from their peers, college students and community leaders. In addition, BW-LEAD will support students in discovering how they can prepare for educational success in high school, while sharing the value of how they can engage in college preparation activities that create pathways to higher education.
