The City and County of Denver's Environmental
Health Department is seeking a Minor Tobacco Operative to assist the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) with the enforcement of the Family Smoking Prevention and
Tobacco Control Act by conducting inspections for compliance with regulations
banning flavored cigarettes, banning modified risk tobacco products, other
advertising and labeling restrictions, and sales to minors.
The mission
of the program is to enforce section 907 (a)(1)(A) and section 911 of the
Federal, Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) and the regulations reissued under
21 CFR Par 1140 with respect to tobacco retail
establishments. Anticipated end date of 9/29/17 or when the
Operative turns 18, whichever comes first.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct compliance inspections of tobacco
retailers.
- Must have leadership abilities and be
outgoing. This position will require initiative and flexibility. Some paperwork
may be required as well, so basic writing, typing, spelling, and Reading
comprehension is needed to fulfill this position.
- This position will require local travel
to retail locations. The minor will be riding along with a county representative
FDA commissioned officer for all compliance inspections. This may include
traveling in a car for several hours at a time as part of the inspection
process. Participants must attend trainings and workshop as required.
- Must have the ability to apply common
sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral
instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables
in a variety of situations. Ability to interpret reports and regulations and
apply information accurately to situations. Must not have any visible tattoos.
Must have parental consent and consent of school if work is done during regular
school hours. Participants may be required to provide testimony in court of
law.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Adolescents aged 16-17 only
- Non-smoker/non-tobacco user (e.g. chewing
tobacco)
- Basic typing/writing skills
- Must currently be at, and maintain, a 3.0
GPA or higher throughout term of employment (will need to attach a
recent school transcript)
- Minimal scheduling conflicts
(school/extracurricular)
- Spanish /English bilingual fluency is
helpful but not required
