My Brother’s Keeper Initiative: In February 2014 the Obama Administration issued the My
Brother’s Keeper Initiative to address the disproportionate gaps of success for
boys and young men of color. The administration challenged cities across
the country to become more strategic in addressing this issue. Over the
past several months the Office of Children’s Affairs has being convening meetings
and sessions with key stakeholders across the city to hear their thoughts and
get their ideas on how to address this important issue. Throughout this
process we have heard overwhelming young men should be at the table as a part
of this process.
In an effort to assure that
authentic youth voice is present in the work of the My Brother’s Keeper
Initiative, the Office of Children’s Affairs has been partnering with local
youth serving community organizations to create dialogue with young men to get
their own perspective, as well as to hear their ideas regarding
solutions. On Saturday, February 14th the Office of Children’s
Affairs, along with other key youth serving community organizations, will be
hosting the My Brother’s Keeper Youth Summit. This gathering of young men
from across the city will look to go deeper with these conversations and to
begin creating strategies to address the issues many of these young men
face. We are asking you to spread the word to young men ages 14-24 about
this summit and encourage them to attend the summit. We feel that youth
are the experts on what they need to succeed and it is vital they have a
platform and avenue to have their voices heard and honored. There is a link below where youth can register.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Thanks.
