Position
Description: Environment for the Americas
(EFTA) invites you to apply for an internship opportunity that will focus on
Latino engagement in conservation issues. The intern will assist in implementing
our America’s Great Outdoors grant involving communicating and collaborating
with other project interns and project sponsors. Knowledge of conservation is not necessary, but a willingness to learn
is required and an enthusiasm for nature a must. You will receive all
necessary professional training and will gain real life job experience.
Responsibilities include but are not
limited to:
50%- Project Liaison Duties
Provide project assistance with the Celebrate Shorebirds
internship program.
·
Recruitment of Latino interns for project sites in
Alaska, Washington, DC, Oregon, southern Colorado, and California.
·
Providing general administrative support such as
record keeping of weekly reports, scheduling conference calls, and other
miscellaneous task.
·
Generating reports for project funders and partners.
·
Organizing travel and logistics of weeklong training
for all interns.
·
Participating in a training (out-of-state)
40%- Social Marketing & Communications
1. Dissemination of EFTA’s work through our bilingual (English
& Spanish) social media platforms.
·
Writing and editing blog site, daily social media
updates, and managing photos.
·
Developing and editing short videos for Internet
publication.
2. Assistance with promoting conservation
messages at national and international levels.
·
Contacting media outlets to bring awareness on EFTA’s
work, write press releases, and setting-up interviews.
·
Online researching of potential funders for
International Migratory Bird Day.
·
Finding new host sites for our environmental programs
throughout Western Hemisphere.
10%- Special Event Coordination
Assist with coordination of yearly Walk in the Wild annual
fundraiser.
·
Request sponsorship for habitat restoration fundraiser
and request donation items from local businesses.
·
Assist with marketing strategy ensuring participation
from local Latino communities.
·
Coordinating involvement of Boulder County
environmental education organizations.
·
Recruitment of volunteers for a tree-planting project
and for the fundraisering event.
Required Qualifications:
·
Excellent verbal and written
communications skills, strong attention to detail, and prior blogging/internet
writing preferred.
·
Outgoing and willingness to
approach new people and organizations.
·
Fluency in English & Spanish.
·
High level of cross-cultural communication
skills necessary to work with diverse communities across the county.
·
Familiarity with local and
national Latino-serving organizations.
·
Successful completion of college
level coursework.
Desired Qualifications:
·
Experience with
Constant Contact, graphic design, or iMovie (or other video editing software).
·
Preference
for candidates with career interests in communications, especially as they
relate to conservation and science writing.
Schedule: Full-time (30 hours + per week) or part-time (15 hours +
per week) schedule available. Flexible hours but must have a consistent weekly
schedule.
Award:
Full-time stipend is $1000 per month. Part-time
stipend is $500 per month. A small lodging stipend may be availalbe to offset
part of lodging related expenses.

Please note: Grant requires interns to be between the
ages of 18-25 of Latino/Hispanic descent. It is mandatory for the intern to
attend the conservation training which is scheduled to take place in California
in February 2014. All expenses are paid for to attend the training.
Project Description: Environment for the Americas (EFTA) is collaborating with U.S. Bureau
of Reclamation, U.S. Forest Service, National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, and
Bureau of Land Management on Celebra las
Aves Playeras (Celebrate Shorebirds), a comprehensive approach to engaging
Hispanics/Latinos in natural resource careers and conservation action through
internships at five sites. EFTA will recruit 8 Hispanic/Latino interns (ages
18-25) from colleges and local communities, especially youth who live near
research sites to help create long-term relationships between agencies and
nearby Hispanic/Latino communities, serve as role models, and increase
awareness of conservation issues and careers in conservation. Interns will
engage in field research, data collection, community outreach, and
environmental education at sites in Washington, DC, California, Colorado, and
Alaska.
